The thought of being able to make pictures on my phone really appealed to me, to no longer have to carry a sketch bag with me everywhere, to have all I need to make pictures in my pocket. I also learned quickly how to use my finger instead of a stylus. I returned to working with bold lines and bright colours, often just a sketch with a wash of colour in the background. These pictures can be transformed into lightboxes, prints or as the basis for paintings.

Amy Macdonald, Omeara, London Bridge, 2017

I had been A&R for Amy Macdonald at Universal, and we had worked on her “Under Stars” album. It had been a transformational time for her as an artist as she had broken free of her management and her co-writer and producer during the making of this album. This was her fourth album, and she is depicted performing a low key show at The London Omera.

Cassettes, East Finchley, 2021

I love cassettes. I couldn’t afford to buy many albums when I was young, but I could afford a C90 cassette and I would record all of my mate’s albums as well as everything I loved off the radio. I went off to college with a suitcase full of hundreds of them. I was still an avid consumer into the nineties, because they were the only format you could play in a car. Plus I loved making up mix tapes for friends. I still have four drawers full of tapes, from those old C90s from school, to the mix tapes I made for friends, to demos by Nirvana, Blur, Radiohead and Oasis.

Patti Smith, Blue Balls Festival, Lausanne 2017

Patti Smith has been a huge inspiration to me throughout my life, first as a musician and then as a writer and an artist. I was lucky to enjoy a working relationship with her, first releasing her music through Columbia Records and then publishing her songs at Warner Chappell. This gave me the excuse to travel to inspiring places to witness her perform and Lausanne on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland, was especially wonderful.
