Lightboxes

In the late nineties I picked up an iMac computer and Photoshop and began to experiment on transforming my sketches into colour pictures. I loved how I could quickly transform my sketches into brightly coloured pictures and add type and other components. I also wanted to maintain the vibrancy they had on my computer. Knowing a print would not glow in the same way I created lightboxes to display the pictures I had made.

In the autumn of 2001, Supergrass were working on their fourth album and their manager had offered them the use of his villa in the South of France as a bolt hole to do some writing. Their singer Gaz Coombes is pictured writing lyrics in his notebook by the side of the pool. It felt very reminiscent of when The Rolling Stones took themselves to the nearby Villa Nellcote to record “Exile on Main Street”

With the arrival of Photoshop and I-Mac, I became excited at transforming my sketches into lightboxes, employing bold colours, text and other information. This is based on the Sketch of Damon at The Grove Café on the Portobello Road, done a few months after the release of the first Gorillaz album. A graffiti sketch of the Gorillaz characters is on the wall in the background.
